STA sock policy restricts students’ expression

It’s a regular Monday morning, a usual wake up time of 6:50 a.m. to MTV morning music. I slowly slide out of bed to throw on a wrinkled STA polo, leggings and my beloved tartan plaid. The time is now 7 a.m. as I partially comb my tangled hair and brush my teeth.

Right before I leave, I venture to our laundry room to find a pair of clean socks. I search through the pile of laundry, but only find a pair of orange, black and gray socks.

“Well these will have to do,” I think to myself.

I arrive at school wearing my ridiculous socks and drag myself into the M&A building. After checking in with my advisor, I ride down the stairs only to see Mr. Bertalott glaring at my socks.

It’s too late to turn back. I can see the pink paper now.

“Maybe I have one more chance” I think. I quickly look down try to avoid eye contact, and squeeze myself into a large group of students.

Now, I know I am not the only student who experiences something like this everyday. The constant paranoia of a teacher or faculty member giving you an SBR for unruly socks is real.

According to the STA dress code, “Solid black or white socks” are only allowed to be worn with our uniform, however, I, along with many other students believe this rule should be eliminated.

I can understand the distractions of outside sweaters and jackets. Jackets tend to be more noticeable and some are over-sized to the point that a student can hardly see, but are socks really that big of a distraction?

People hardly look that low to the ground, and most people don’t care about the color or design of someone’s socks, especially during the winter months because most girls wear boots.

So why should socks be banned?

Fuzzy, warm socks are the best during winter, but I have never seen a pair of these socks be in plain black and white. How are my feet supposed to be warm without my fuzzy socks?

Socks are a good way for students to express their personality or just be more comfortable during school.

We should not have to worry about getting an SBR for a garment that is barely noticeable.

Students should be able to wear socks of their liking, as long as they are not offensive to faculty or fellow students.

I dream of a day at STA where students flaunt their Christmas socks in March and their sweater socks in the dead of winter.

I agree with Mismatched Socks. If I happen to notice someone’s socks and they’re out of uniform, I’m definitely going to tell them I like them…not that they are out of uniform. Nothing is distracting until it is brought to attention.

Why shouldn’t we be able to wear a pink sock and a white sock, or purple striped socks? Really, why not?

I agree with both the article and the above comment! Socks can hardly be called distracting, and they’re a great way for us to express our individual style in an otherwise restrictive dress code. I also find it a little ridiculous that we are not allowed to wear colored socks while others get away with wearing extremely loud and flashy sports bras. However, if that’s how they want to show their personality, I think that’s fine. While I understand why STA has a dress code, I think they should make it a little easier for students to express who they are in terms of style. I love fashion, and I think an easy way to show that would be through a simple pair of fun, colorful socks.

I love this article! I have never been distracted by someone’s socks. Now that I think about it, I don’t think I have ever looked at a girl and thought “Wow, look at those socks.” If we are going to get in trouble because of bright colored socks being distracted, they should also make a policy about neon colored sports bras. Those are far more distracting than socks. Almost everyday I see girls walk in front of me and all I see is neon orange or purple and pink poka-dots.

I also agree with you when you say we should be able to wear our christmas socks when ever we want. I have fuzzy penguin socks and sometimes I just feel like wearing them!
