Tube Socks and Sports Bras: Super Bowl XLVII

Out of 32 teams, two teams have defeated the odds and made it to the biggest stage. One game left. One time to make history. One final night. One chance. The game of the year for football. Everything comes to an end this Sunday. Super Bowl Sunday.

Yeah, so if you haven’t heard yet the Super Bowl is this weekend. And, it’s kind of a big deal.

For these next couple days don’t expect to see anything else on SportsCenter except for picturesque camera shots of New Orleans, footage of Ray Lewis getting emotional, comparisons of the two Harbaugh brothers and predictions on who will win the game.

But frankly, I’m okay with that. And guess what, that’s what you are going to get in this blog (minus the pictures of New Orleans).

I love the Super Bowl. It’s near the top of my list of favorite sporting events (after March Madness of course). It’s what football players dream about for all of their life. Playing in the bright lights in front of millions of people. It’s like something out of the movies.

Like most Super Bowls, Super Bowl XLVII has many story lines. Trust me you will hear about these story lines…again…and again…and again.

The most unique story line of this Super Bowl is the two Harbaugh brothers coaching against each other. Harbowl. Super Bro. Whatever you want to call it, it’s pretty amazing. It’s crazy to think that two brothers have the chance to coach against each other in the biggest game of their lives. It doesn’t get any better than that.

Then there is Ray Lewis. The talk of the town this week. Many people do not like him because of events in his past. But there is one thing you have to admire about Ray Lewis, his passion for football. With this being the last time Ray Lewis will ever play in an NFL game, you can expect that he will be more emotional and motivated than any other person on the field. You will probably be able to see his emotions from the opening second of the broadcast. I’m expecting full on tears streaming down his face during the National Anthem. The NFL is going to miss having someone like Ray Lewis with so much passion and love for the game.

Another key discussion about the Super Bowl is the quarterbacks. Colin Kaepernick, quarterback for the 49ers, and Joe Flacco, quarterback for the Baltimore Ravens, are both playing in their first Super Bowl. That’s pretty intense. I’m sure Kaepernick can feel the pressure and nerves because he is only making his 10th career start as an NFL quarterback. Then, there is Joe Flacco, while he has been in the league for 5 years, this is his first appearance in the Super Bowl. When it comes to experience vs. rookie, who knows what could happen. It’s the Super Bowl, anything can happen.

And of course, after the game is over, the things that will be talked about for weeks to come, the commercials. While my personal favorite are always the Doritos commercials, every year there is always “that one commercial.” I’m pretty sure 50 percent of the viewers during the Super Bowl care more about the commercials than the game. But, hey, I won’t hold it against you. Just make sure you know who actually wins the game or else I might have to hold it against you.

And of course, who could forget Beyoncé? Honestly, I think this is a perfect choice for the halftime show. It’s going to be amazing because obviously Beyoncé is amazing. Duh.

Anyway, back to the game, personally I want San Francisco to win this year. I may be a little biased because two of my Mizzou guys, Aldon Smith (reppin’ Raytown) and Justin Smith are on the team. I guarantee you will hear their names a lot during the game. But personally, I just really enjoy watching this San Francisco team, who are favored to win by four points. I know it would be easy to root for Ray Lewis in his final game, and part of me will be, but I have to stick with the 49ers.

So this weekend, while you are enjoying your typical Super Bowl parties and snacks, enjoy this game. The Super Bowl is one of the greatest events in all of sports and there are so many incredible stories in this game. It will be fun to watch everything play out.
