Halloween: what not to wear

By  Mickey Redlingshafer

As Halloween approaches STA girls have moved on from searching for the perfect Teresian dress, to scavenging for a top-notch Halloween getup. Halloween is always a big day at STA, I have seen all types of costumes, even some of the teachers dress up. Everyone loves talking about what or who they’re going to be and usually there are some pretty good ones, especially at school. However, these Halloween costumes often revolutionize from school dress-up day to the weekend. And not in a good way. On occasion girls like to dress up as the timeless ‘naughty nurse’, the perfectly original ‘French maid’, or the recently popular ‘sultry cop’. These types of costumes, as I stated before, are completely original—you have to be very creative to think up costumes like these. This is why these types of costumes are so rare, yet valued. In the terrific film Mean Girls Cady Heron (played by Lindsay Lohan) states the rules of Halloween perfectly when she says, “In the real world, Halloween is when kids dress up in costumes and beg for candy. In Girl World, Halloween is the one day a year when a girl can dress [inappropriately] and no other girls can say anything else about it.” As stated in Mean Girls these costumes are the only way a girl can look cute on Halloween, otherwise we would have to dress up as something scary, or God forbid be hidden under a mask.

mickey-redlingshaferI hope you realize that my whole spiel about ‘sexy’ Halloween costumes was a joke. I do not think these costumes are original or cute, actually I find them to be the opposite. And don’t get me wrong Mean Girls,a gem of a movie, defiantly makes the list of my top five favorite movies. Rarely are false statements made in this film, I could go as far to say that usually this is a movie I would swear by, but surprisingly in this instance Mean Girls is dead wrong. Honestly if girls dress up in these outfits they will be talked about, and probably not in a good way.

In every Halloween magazine I see the same ten or so ‘sexy’ costumes for girls. I mean come on costume companies where is your creativity? I have seen too much of this , this , and way too much of this . Costume companies are not fully to blame;after all they are making a good profit off these all-too-skimpy outfits, every year girls go in and buy these costumes, why? What happened to being something unique, clever or even scary on Halloween?

People need to become creative and begin to think outside the box. When someone comes up with costumes that are totally innovative they always get a better response. Even if the costume is not of the best quality, the idea is respected. It is a better idea to search your house and make your costume than to go out and buy one that many other people already have. I like it best when people dress as something funny or really gruesome, this way you can tell they are dressing up for Halloween not for the purpose of looking good.

People may think that there is no alternative way to look attractive, aside from the unoriginal boring ‘sexy’ costumes; this is completely false. There are tons of ways to look cute but still be original, for instance you could be a singer like Lady Gaga or Ke$ha, that way you could make a creative outfit and still look cute. You could also be a hippie, you could make your costume at home, make it very original but still look appealing. Wearing a mask, or dressing up as something scary or funny is not social suicide, and does not automatically make you unattractive, it shows you are creative. Besides you could still make those costumes look attractive.

All in all I think the ‘sexy’ costumes are overused, unoriginal and unattractive. These ‘sexy’ costumes are so last decade. People need to stop wearing them and start coming up with new costume ideas that do not revolve around looking good. Halloween should be about having the most creative costume, not the most revealing.
