Feb. 10 1995 issue of the Dart: “amid fanfare and accompanied by security guards, the new STA mascot, Twinks, was introduced at a recent assembly. Purchased by the SCO to appear at sporting events and raise school spirit, Twinks was enthusiastically greeted by the STA student body.
According to a Dec. 6 2007 Dart article, “Sta held a school wide competition to elect a new mascot and its nickname. According to Bode-Rodriguez, it was a close race between the Saints, Tigers and Stars
“Twinks had a major defect – an adhesive problem. The costume fell apart after one wear and had to be returned to the manufacturer for repairs . . . ‘I guess for now, it just wasn’t in the stars for Twinks to be here,’ said SCO member Amy Aldrich.”
Cost of new Twinks: $3,500
Old STA Mascot: The Tessies
Here are the results of what 40 students polled by the Dart said regarding the gender of Twinks. Two had no comment.
Boy:25
Girl: 13
Two opinions pitched in on their arguments. According to junior Micah Welsh, the all girl’s school makes Twinks a boy.
“We don’t need any more estrogen, so he’s a boy,” Welsh said.
However, Flores disagrees, though uses the same fact to justify her choice.
“This is an all girls school. No boys allowed. Therefore, Twinks is a girl,” Flores said.
