Just when you thought it was baseball season and football and basketball season has passed, here comes the NFL Draft.
Yep, get ready for constant ESPN coverage of players you have never heard of and analysis on how one guy will change the whole dynamic of a team.
Last night began the first night of the 2013 NFL Draft. Just like every year, the projections were made of who’s going where. What teams are making trades. And finally all the rumors came to an end as the teams made their picks.
The draft gets hyped up all week, but it’s kind of disappointing when the real event starts.
Obviously the best part is without a doubt how the crowd boos the commissioner every single year. It honestly never gets old. In fact, it gets better every year.
Not only do they boo the commissioner, they boo everyone. I bet the guys in the crowd have never even heard of half the players they are booing. But hey, whatever floats your boat guys. Keep on booing, it adds an entertaining side to the draft.
After all the booing and awkwardness that is the commissioner, the Chiefs had the first pick in the NFL draft. I find that the funniest part of the draft is the clock. The Chiefs probably knew days ago who they were going to select as the overall pick. But, every year we find it necessary to put those 5 minutes on the clock.
The Chiefs selected offensive lineman Eric Fisher from Central Michigan. This was an unusual pick because not only is he not from a power six conference, but Fisher is only the fourth tackle to be selected number one overall since the late 60s.
This is a good pick for the Chiefs because even though everyone focuses on the quarterback, you need good linemen up front protecting him. Hopefully Fisher will help protect Alex Smith and get some offensive production for the Chiefs this year.
Even though it’s sometimes boring, the NFL draft really is a special night for football players. Current NFL players get the chance to learn who their new teammates will be. Current college players get to watch their former teammates reach their dreams. And players who are drafted have a lifelong dream fulfilled.
As the selected players walk across the stage and hug the commissioner, we are watching kids’ dreams come true. All their hard work payed off and they have the chance to play at the highest level possible. It’s really a special thing to watch if you really understand the importance of this night for the NFL.
