This not that: energy drinks

by Emily Wemhoff

Coconut water, not Gatorade

This low-calorie water found in green coconuts can enhance athletic performance and boost energy. It also has five times more potassium than a regular sports drink. Although it can substitute for Gatorade, coconut water does not contain as much sodium—the main electrolyte lost when you sweat—as conventional sports drinks. However, neither coconut water nor sports drinks contain enough sodium or carbohydrates for rigorous exercise. Snacks like bananas and raisins will replace those energy stores after a workout.

V8 V Fusion + Energy, not Red Bull

V8 V Fusion + Energy is a healthier alternative to most energy drinks on the market today. The 50 calorie drinks are made with vegetable and fruit juices, and each serving contains one combined serving of vegetables and fruit. While V8 V Fusion + Energy supplies “natural energy” through green tea, in drinks such as Red Bull, experts say stimulants can be especially dangerous during intense exercise. Drinks like Red Bull can also cause dangerous effects on blood pressure, heart rate and brain function.

Chocolate milk, not a protein shake

One of the best post-workout options is chocolate milk, the cheaper alternative to expensive protein shakes. Chocolate milk’s mix of protein and carbohydrates can refuel exhausted muscles. Milk is also not as caloric and reduces lactic acid found in the blood. If your workout is not as intense, this would be the perfect choice. Every cup of chocolate milk contains between 8 and 11 grams of protein. Milk also provides minerals like calcium, potassium and magnesium that exercisers need to replace after strenuous activity.
