Sister, Sister: Halloween

Sister, Sister: Halloween

(null)

By Allison and Natalie Fitts

It’s that time of year once again. The time when you can dress up as a freak and annoy your neighbors for candy. That’s right, folks. It’s Halloween! For us, Halloween has always been a day full of memories and crazy stories. Allison will write in orange and talk about candy, while Natalie will write in blue and talk about costumes.

I love Halloween! It is the quintessential holiday for kids. Although I participated in the childish tradition of collecting candy, I took a more practical approach to my candy consumption. I always sorted my candy right after trick-or-treating. There were four major categories, each with subdivisions.

  • chocolate: Twix, Snickers, Milky Way, 3 Musketeers, Reese’s. This was obviously the best group.
  • fruity: Starbursts, Laffy Taffy, Skittles, Nerds, Jolly Ranchers. A strong group, but it had nothing on chocolate.
  • gross: Heath, Bottle Caps, Whoppers, Necco Wafers, Spongebob Krabby Patties. I would always offer to trade Natalie all of this candy for just one item from the chocolate group.(I rarely, if ever, accepted)
  • other: soda, pretzels, kettle corn, cookies, toys. The items of this group were pretty good, but getting candy was better. (Actually, this was the best group. The feeling of getting handed a giant bottle of Dr. Pepper and a package of Grandma’s Chocolate Chip Cookies was, is, and always will be one of the best feelings in the world.)

I wasn’t that weird. I just ate the candy as I pleased. Simple as that. And while I love Halloween with a passion, I do have some rather un-fond memories of the holiday. It all started in 1st grade. I was dressed up as a witch (see picture below). It was an awesome costume (made by my mom), and I was going to show it off at a Halloween party at St. Pius X High School. We were all ready to go and started our journey to SPX. And then it happened. My bowels turned on me. I had diarrhea right there. In my witch costume. Driving down the road. By the time we reached the party, we had to turn right back around and go home. Needless to say, Allison wasn’t a happy camper. And she wasn’t even the one sitting in her own waste.

I think the only time I have been madder at you was when you were sick and we almost didn’t go on vacation. I have a tendency to get mad at you for sickness you can’t control. The worst part of the whole night, though, was that I didn’t get to show off my mummy costume. It was to die for. Pun intended.

I loved the witch costume so much, and my mom worked so hard on it, I just couldn’t let it go to waste (pun intended). She washed it right up and I wore it a few days later on actual Halloween. That’s how I roll.

I will admit that our mom has made some pretty great costumes for us over the years (anyone remember Spongebob from a couple years back?), but you re-wearing that ruined witch costume? I can’t find the right words to describe how weird that is.

Anyway, people gave me tons of un-soiled costumes to donate to Operation Breakthrough this Halloween. 201 in all! Whoever left the Veggie Tale tomato costume on my front porch is an awesome human being. End of story.

Just like Natalie collected those costumes and donated them to a good cause, I want to encourage you all to do something for a good cause this Halloween. Next Monday from 4-7 p.m., the Community Service club is hosting their annual “Food for Thought” canned good collection drive. You trick-or-treat for canned goods in the neighborhoods surrounding STA and it is a great opportunity to “serve the dear neighbor”. Plus, you usually get some candy, too. Pick up permission slips in Ms. Hansborough’s room and I hope to see you all on Halloween.

Have fun with the Halloween spirit this week! Carve pumpkins, wear a costume or two and eat a ton of candy. We wish you all a happy and safe Halloween. Until next time, see ya sistas!
