As many hip STA students who keep up with media fads know, the newest viral youtube sensation (other than Peeper Gray’s magic shot) is the song “Friday” by the one and only Rebecca Black.

Simply put, it is among the worst songs I’ve ever heard.

To put into perspective, the video currently has over 39 million hits on youtube. 58,874 likes and 503,630 dislikes (as of 11:04 on March 23).

I am slightly embarrassed to say I am two of those hits.

So, I could spend about 500 words reiterating the harsh, albeit occasionally accurate, insulting comments beneath the video on youtube. But, I’d like to focus on something else.

This video’s enormous popularity is yet another example of how as a generation, we popularize terrible books, movies  and, of course, music.

When anyone videotapes/says/does/writes/sings something particularly embarrassing or rediculously untalented, we Generation Me-ers jump on youtube and give it 39 million hits, more exposure than many legitimately talented artists receive.

Good for Rebecca, for all of the media attention that she’s getting. However, I’m guessing it’s not said with positivity when people call her the “Black Plague.”
