Artist of the Month: Sophomore Brianna Valine

Artist of the Month: Sophomore Brianna Valine

by Chelsea Birchmier

Q&A with Brianna Valine, sophomore

What type of art are you most interested in?

I like to play alternative rock and chill music [on the guitar.] I sing also.

What art/music classes have you taken?

I’m in STA Singers, a capella and I also do Praise Band. I’ve done voice lessons, guitar lessons and I did piano lessons outside of school.

Do you have any musical inspirations?

Darren Criss and Taylor Swift are my big music inspirations because they’re both amazing songwriters and performers.

When did you become interested in music?

I don’t even know. I always grew up with music in my house. My mom as her wedding present got a piano, so my mom plays piano and my dad plays piano. I guess I would say I became most interested in music when I started taking piano lessons, which led me to guitar. That’s when I really started thinking like, oh this is really cool, I can play guitar and sing and it’s fun to do.

What is your favorite kind of music to play?

Alternative rock because I like the way it sounds. Jazz is also fun to play.

Is there a musical artist you admire at STA?

Ruby Dibble for sure and Madison Fitzgerald. We’re actually in a band together. It’s called “This is Baltimore.” We play jazz and alternative rock. Not jazz-jazz, but jazz-inspired almost.

I just thought of the word to describe our music: folk.

Do you think music will play a role in your future?

Absolutely. I plan on growing up and writing musicals with my best friends.
