Some Pre-Health Club members attended Children’s Mercy career fair Oct. 20 from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. The hospital started with a panel discussing the different careers at the hospital. They had representatives in physical therapy, occupational therapy, laboratory sciences, music therapy, EMT, sports medicine, social work, nutrition, pharmacy and bioinformatics.

One of the purposes of the career fair is to show students that hospital jobs do not just consist of only doctors and nurses.

“I really enjoyed getting to learn about different career paths within healthcare,” sophomore and club member Molly Sexton said. “There were many ‘traditional’ doctors there, but there were also people such as ophthalmologists, transport teams and radiologists who I feel like I never get to really hear about what they do. It was interesting to learn about what they did on a daily basis and just how much they do for kids.”

Sexton decided to attend the fair because when she’s older, she would like to be an orthopedic surgeon. If she had a chance to go again, she would.

“When I heard about it, I thought it would be a great opportunity to learn how doctors and surgeons operate,” Sexton said. “I would love to go again next year. It was such an interesting and rare opportunity, and I was so fortunate to experience it.”
