Movie reviews from STA’s journalim students

As part of a project for journalism class, students created podcasts to review parts of the pop culture of today, from coffee shops to comedies. Here are their movie reviews.

  • The movie ‘How to Train Your Dragon’ came out recently on DVD. Hiccup, a Viking boy, has captured a dragon and attempts to train it.

Journalism student Mattie Davis believes ‘How to Train Your Dragon’ is a predictable yet heartwarming movie.

  • This movie describes toys that want to be how they used to, and it has just come out in 2010 in theaters and on DVD. This movie is all around the U.S. ‘Toy Story 3’ was made to extend the wonderful collection of the movie. ‘Toy Story 3’ has many toys involved, with a owner named Andy who has just grown out of playing with them and is off to college, so the toys just want the lives they used to have.

Journalism student Hannah Krull believes that the movie ‘Toy Story 3’ explains and shows many good examples and views of life, and how to do the correct and right thing.

  • ‘Secretariat’ can be seen only as a retelling of a famous historical event, but also as one of the most inspirational stories ever told. The story takes place in the late 1960s through the early 70s in Virginia, when family struggles lead to an investment of time, money, and heart.

Journalism student Maggie Bowen found ‘Secretariat’ to have truly grasped the inspirational story of a great horse, a dedicated owner, and an incredible generation. The film captured the characters whose actions made the entire story possible, as well as their emotions that drove those actions to be possible.

  • ‘Megamind’ an animated movie starring Will Ferrell, Brad Pitt, and Tina Fey, opened on Friday, October 5, 2010. Its family friendly and tells the story of a blue super villain.

Journalism Student Katie Parkinson thinks that ‘Megamind’ is a mildly entertaining movie and  that its best feature is the characters, which are quirky and delightfully put together.

  • The Sound of Music originally came out on Broadway, but in 1965 Robert Wise made it a film. Julie Andrews plays Maria, a young woman preparing to be a nun, who comes to govern for the von Trapp family. Maria helps Captain von Trapp (Christopher Plummer) and his family bring music and fun back into their home.

Journalism student Paige Drummond reviews the classic movie ‘The Sound of Music.’ ‘The Sound of Music’ is a true life story that captures the hearts and ears of it’s viewers.

  • This movie is based around two people that cannot stand each other, Holly(Katherine Heigl) and Messer (Josh Duhamel), who have to raise their best friends, Allison (Christina Hendricks) and Peter (Hayes MacArthur), daughter after they pass away in an automobile accident. ‘Life As We Know It’ takes place in Atlanta and a little bit in Phoenix during this time period.

Journalism student Maddie Horton believes that the movie is a very predictable chick-flick. She thought that the synopsis of the movie could be derived from the previews. ‘Life As We Know It’ is a chick flick and truly lives up to that expectation.

  • The Other Guys, written and directed by Adam Mckay, takes place in present-day New York. This movie is about two police officers competing to be the best force out there in this fun-filled comedy.

Journalism student Grace Wells thought the movie was hilarious and the comedy was great, however she felt the movie was sexist and demeaning to women. She didn’t feel that women were being treated right or respectfully.

  • ‘It’s Kind of a Funny Story,’ starring Keir Gilchrist (Craig), Emma Roberts (Noelle), and Zack Galinfianakis (Bob), is a movie about a teenager who has recently been having suicidal thoughts so he begs to be admitted into a mental ward. This movie takes place in present day New York City, and this movie occurs over a five day period.

Journalism student Adrianna Ohmes believes that the movie, ‘It’s Kind of a Funny Story,’ was well acted and emotionally touching, but was not a very realistic story. She thought the movie was funny but not in a stupid way, and that it was inspirational even though it wasn’t plausible.
