Almost Southern: I’m probably too obsessed with G-Eazy

The obsession is real and it’s probably unhealthy.

Almost Southern: I'm probably too obsessed with G-Eazy

by Meredith Mulhern, Staff Writer

This week’s blog is dedicated to the love of my life, Gerald Earl Gillum. If you don’t know who this is, you need a serious reality check.

Gerald Earl Gillum, better known as G-Eazy, is quite possibly my favorite person ever. I love all of his music and I love him. He’s such a stylish little guy. His voice is literal perfection, not to mention he has impeccable style. I mean, have you seen his hair?

Before I go gushing about G-Eazy some more, I should probably tell you who he is. Like I said before, his legal name is Gerald Gillum. He is a dang good rapper who grew up in the San Francisco Bay area and went to Loyola University New Orleans. He has a brother named James (ask senior Grace Girardeau about James). His mom is literally the cutest woman I’ve ever seen. This guy also comes from pretty humble roots. He mentions in quite a few of his songs that he kind of had a rough time growing up, but now he’s a famous rapper who goes on world tours and sells out all of his shows. I don’t know about you, but to me that is success in a nutshell.

I first heard about G-Eazy through some girls freshmen year. Back in the day, also known as 2013, virtually every girl in my grade was obsessed with Hoodie Allen, another rapper. I listened to some Hoodie to see what all of the fuss was about, and G-Eazy was featured in a song of his or something. I was like “Hey, who is this guy? This is some good music!” So I looked him up and the rest is history. Hoodie took a backseat to G-Eazy. (Sorry, Hoodie).

If I haven’t convinced you of my obsession yet, I have dozens of G-Eazy’s songs on my playlist and know the words to 98% of them. I also have several songs where he is a featured artist, and I know the words to those, too. I would have to say my favorite song is “Tumblr Girls” and I don’t really have a least favorite song. I enjoy them all.

That’s another good thing about G-Eazy. Whenever one of my favorite artists comes out with a new album, I always have high expectations that are unfortunately never met. However, G-Eazy meets all of my expectations without fail. I loved his new album, I loved the album before that, and I loved his first album. You literally cannot go wrong with G-Eazy.

So, when I found out he was coming to Kansas City back in December, I was ecstatic. I screamed when I saw the tour dates and saw good ol’ KC on the list. I kid you not, I could not speak. I got my tickets and waited for January 12 to come.

When the day of the concert finally came, my friends and I arrived to the Midland Theater in downtown KC. We got there at 6:30, which was when the doors opened. We were like, “Oh, we’re going to get right in and get a spot.” Wrong. So, so, so wrong. It was 25 degrees outside and the line to get into the Midland was around the block. We waited outside for an hour and a half, and we got so cold that eventually we couldn’t even feel the temperature outside. I seriously considered giving one of the groupies all of the money in my bank account to let us on the heated tour bus for two minutes.

We finally got into the venue, and although I never quite recovered from nearly freezing to death, I had the time of my life. G-Eazy was the best concert I have been to. He’s got a great presence on stage and he’s great in general, so of course I loved it.

I wish I could’ve done two things though. If I could go back, I wish that I could be way closer to the stage so I could see better since I can barely see out of my left eye (I have terrible vision). My second wish is that I could go back and meet him. I will forever be jealous of junior Mackenzie O’Guin for meeting G-Eazy. I would probably chop off my hair and sell it if it meant meeting G-Eazy (not all of it though, I like my hair). But, now that I think about, I would probably faint if I met G-Eazy or forget how to speak English. Whatever. That’s a price I’m willing to pay.

G-Eazy is coming back this summer with another fellow rapper, Logic. I would love to go, but alas, I’m a poor high school student who only has a summer nannying job and it’s not summer yet. Long story short, I’m broke. If someone would like to hit me up with G-Eazy tickets, I’ll bake you a cookie cake. If you somehow got me to meet G-Eazy, I would bake you a cookie cake every week for the rest of your life. Or at least until you’re sick of me and the cookie cakes.

G-Eazy, if you’re reading this, please don’t think I’m psycho. Some of my friends might say I am, but I’m really not. Okay, thanks, bye. I love you. Okay, bye.
