Chuy’s: ecletic decor, delicious eats
May 13, 2014
I walk through a red door and into an entryway with the walls covered, literally every inch filled, with cameras; old, new, polaroids, digital, maybe a hundred cameras. I know within seconds that I’m going to like this place.
Chuy’s, a Tex-Mex style restaurant opened at the Country Club Plaza Sept. 24 in place of Figlio The Italian Restaurant & Bar at 209 W. 46th Terrace. The chain restaurant based in Austin, Texas “offers a taste of home,” according to their website.
We continue walking into the building to meet a peppy, cheerful greeter who takes us to our table. We follow her to the back of the restaurant, passing an open kitchen with a section jutting out where a woman is making fresh tortillas. We make it to the back room and are instantly surrounded by fake palm trees and bright floors painted with optical illusions
My family and I sit down and in true Mexican-restaurant style are served bottomless tortilla chips and salsa. We order the creamy Jalapeno sauce to go with our chips, which I would describe as ranch with a spicy kick.
Our server is quick to refill drinks and chips and we are soon ready to order. I order the deluxe quesadillas off the the appetizer menu. Our food comes quickly and we dove right in. The quesadillas were quite small, but this makes sense since it was meant to be an appetizer. They were delicious; the chicken and cheese inside were grilled to the perfect crispy texture and were very flavorful. The meal came with pico de gallo, sour cream and guacamole. The guacamole was some of the best I’ve ever had, creamy and fresh. The pricing wasn’t bad, the quesadilla was around $9. The creamy Jalapeno sauce did cost us an extra 59 cents.
I would gladly eat at Chuy’s many times to come. The eclectic feel of the decor really made it a fun dining experience. I can only imagine how nice it would be to enjoy lunch in late spring in their outdoor seating. Overall, I give Chuy’s a 5 out of 5 tacos for their quick, delightful service and delicious, fresh food.
