Throwback Thursdays popular Instagram tradition

Throwback Thursdays popular Instagram tradition
by Caitlin Fletcher

Every Thursday the Instagram homepage fills up with pictures of friends and family from younger years. This tradition has become known as “Throwback Thursday.” Many STA girls have Instagram accounts and many of them participate in “Throwback Thursday” including senior, Margoth Mackey.

“I think [Throwback Thursday] is actually kind of funny,” Mackey said as she scrolled through her own instagram home page midday on a Thursday.

Her Instagram feed at 11:00 am on a Thursday already had multiple pictures that her friends had posted from their younger years. Mackey also tries to participate in Throwback Thursday.

“I participate [in Throwback Thursday] when I remember its Thursday, but I don’t always remember,” Mackey said. “It’s just because I don’t check my Instagram all the time so I don’t always know.”

Senior, Sadie Duffy, also tries to participate in Throwback Thursday.

“I do it sometimes when I have a funny picture,” Duffy said.

One of the reasons Duffy participates in Throwback Thursday is because she likes looking through old pictures.

“One of the pictures I posted was of me and my friend Kendall from the lake,” Duffy said. “I wasn’t even in the picture it was just a selfie of her and she follows me on Instagram, so she saw it.”

Even though posting pictures of old times can be fun, sometimes it’s more fun to look at other people’s.

“I love scrolling through Instagram on Thursdays and seeing pictures of my friends from when they were little or from when they were in grade school,” Duffy said.

Throwback Thursday is popular, but it isn’t the only special thing on Instagram.

“Sometimes they do contests on Instagram that are like post a picture of your best friend on the first day, then maybe post like a picture of your pet on the last day,” Duffy said.

Even though Duffy participates in Throwback Thursday she doesn’t always particpate, and neither does Mackey.

“The contests get kind of annoying,” Mackey said. “I mean it’s like I don’t want to be mean but no one really cares that much.”

“It also like blows up your news feed so it can be annoying,” Duffy said. “My little sister will text me and say like my picture. I think people liking other people’s pictures is a big deal on Instagram. Everyone wants a lot of likes on their pictures.”

According to Duffy, depending on what the picture is of, regular pictures tend to get more likes than Throwbacks.

“Even though they don’t get as many likes, I still think Throwback Thursdays are a good tradition [on Instagram],” Duffy said.
