The gym was roaring with anticipation from students awaiting Abby Wambach’s arrival at STA. On Feb. 3 the professional soccer player, and Olympic Gold Medalist visited and spoke to STA’s student body. Wambach, 31, spoke about her experiences in a single-sex Catholic high school as well as how she feels to do what she loves for a living.

Students asked questions ranging from when she started playing soccer, to what she wants to do after she retires, and even how she feels under those winning game dog piles. English teacher Ms. Katie Dolan and sophomore Frankie Neunuebel introduced Wambach.

“When I heard I was introducing Wambach, I was so excited,” Neunuebel said. “I couldn’t even believe it, she’s such a worldwide icon for soccer.”
Nuenuebel met Wambach at the KC Women’s Sport’s Award’s Luncheon on Feb. 3 where Nuenuebel received the award Price Chopper Youth Sports Girl Award. Nuenuebel won the award after overcoming brain cancer and competing in golf, tennis and being an equestrian. Nuenuebel was nervous about announcing and meeting Wambach but said she was really nice.
“She was so chill,” Nuenuebel said. “I didn’t feel like I was meeting a two time gold medalist.”
