According to college counselor Debi Hudson, NHS held a service project last week to help a local shelter this winter. They asked for used scarves, mittens, and winter hats from the student body and staff. Holy Family Catholic Worker House will receive the items.
“It’s the perfect time of year to think about those less fortunate who will be cold in the coming months,” Hudson said.
According to NHS service chair Lucia Maschler, each year NHS sponsors some sort of drive or charity project. This year they decided to do a used winter clothing drive because it is so accessible for everyone.
“We felt like it would be easy to go through old winter wear and give away some of the stuff people never use,” Maschler said. “We did not want girls to feel pressured to go buy something, and hopefully this way we will get more people to help out the cause.”
Sophomore Abby Dearth agrees that it is very easy for students to go home and grab something out of their closets to donate.
“It’s a great thing to donate to people that are not as well off as us,” Dearth said. “We all know how cold it is at this time of year and how fortunate we are to have a warm roof over our head. It is so easy to donate one piece of clothing.”
According to Maschler, NHS decided to hold the drive because there are so many people out there who suffer from the freezing cold in the winter.
“It is important to help those in need, especially since the holidays are approaching,” Maschler said.
