Flexibilty aids in teenage work life at Foo’s

Employees at Foo’s Fabulous Frozen Custard in Brookside say that one of the biggest benefits of working at Foo’s is their flexible schedule. By having this, Clare Bowen, Maggie Bowen, and Hattie Svoboda-Stel are able to do other after-school activities.

Foo’s Fabulous Frozen Custard was originally owned by Joe Bremser, who began the company in 1988. Foo’s was then purchased by his sister Betty Bremser in 1996 and has continued on since then. Foo’s Fabulous Frozen Custard in Brookside has been open for 23 years and has switched ownership a few times, but is currently watched over and managed by Betty.

The flexible schedules at Foo’s mirror an overall casual atmosphere. If you want a job, you walk in, write your number down on a napkin, and wait for a call, according to a freshman at STA, Maggie Bowen, sister of Clare Bowen.

Maggie, who started working at Foo’s in April, has the perk of a flexible schedule. Even though according to www.stopchildlabor.org, federal and state laws prohibit children under 16 years old from working during the nighttime, Maggie still works from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. some nights, because of school, track practice and sometimes horse riding.

‘I love it, its really fun and a great way to earn money,’ Maggie said, “It is a normal job, and as long as everything runs smoothly, Betty is happy.”

Maggie Bowen, right and co-worker Claire Odegard work to get an ice cream order of a concrete mix together. While Maggie places a lid on top of the ice cream Odegard prepares another order that was taken. (Mady Sargent)Svoboda-Stel has been around Betty since she was her teacher back in grade school at Academy Lafayette, where she still works today. Betty teaches French there, and Hattie was her student, when she attended Academy Lafayette.

‘She normally likes to hire her old students, because she knows them well and how well they work,’ said Svoboda-Stel.

As part of the employees’ schedule, payment comes every Friday, and it is minimum wage. However, for Clare Bowen, a senior at STA , the payment is raised more, because of the amount of time she has been working in the shop. Besides tip, employees get the money that is handed over to them on a weekly basis. According to Svoboda-Stel, normally shifts run for about 4-5 hours and they work about 3-4 days a week, or as many as possible.

Most places, and more specifically Peachwave or Yogurtini require workers to be at least 16 and also give a definite schedule. With Foo’s in Brookside, employees only have to be 14 and its their schedule choice. Although no applications are being taken at the time, workers there continue to do their job and get along with co-workers, their boss, and sometimes classmates.

‘I love Betty, she just genuinely likes teenagers, and likes me,” said Clare,” and I am friends with everyone I work with, so I actually have fun while on the job.”

From Svoboda-Stel, to both of the Bowen sisters, Foo’s Fabulous Frozen Custard is filled with people known locally, and a few others. According to Foo’s online website it has been chosen as ‘Kansas City’s Best Local Ice Cream/Custard’, so stop on by.

I thought it was nice how you have both the Bowen sisters involved in the story, instead of just maggie. It was a really cool story!
