The STA math team participated in the Kansas City Area Teachers of Mathematics competition Saturday. The competition included more than 250 students from 19 local high schools.
The schools were split into small school and large school divisions; STA participated as a small school. In the small school division, STA placed 2nd overall. Blue Valley High School won 1st place.
Of 80 individual awards, STA students won 18 of the 29 awards won by females.
Freshman individual awards-
Shelby Hawkins: 2nd in algebraic equations, 2nd in geometry, 2nd in word problems, 3rd in number sense and 2nd place as an all-around freshman
Katie Hornbeck: 5th in geometry
Sophomore individual awards-
Kate Sanders: 3rd in word problems, 4th in algebraic equations and 5th in geometry
Libby Stoops: 3rd in algebraic equations and 4th in graphing
Lane Maguire: 4th in word problems
Junior individual awards-
Paige Wendland: 4th in algebraic equations and 4th in word problems
Senior individual awards-
Sue Semani: 4th in trigonometry, 4th in word problems, 4th in calculus, 5th in probability/statistics and 3rd place all-around senior
Libby O’Neil: 3rd in calculus
Team awards-
Mathletics: Libby O’Neil, Paige Wendland and Laura Martin placed 3rd
Advanced Math: Sue Semani, Paige Wendland and Laura Martin
placed 3rd
Algebra: Kathleen Hough, Libby Stoops, Lane McGuire and Natalie Rall placed 3rd
Geometry: Hannah Wolf, Sarah Kostoryz, Shelby Hawkins and Katie Hornbeck placed 1st
Word Problems: Libby O’Neil, Erin Sellers, Grace Crowe and Kate Sanders placed 2nd
