St. Teresa’s juniors and seniors disperse throughout the city to serve the community February 22-26.
This week is Phase One for juniors and Phase Three for seniors of the three-phase service system at St. Teresa’s. Phase Two occurs between the completion of Phase One and senior year orientation. The requirement to finish each phase is 30 hours, resulting in a total of 90 hours by graduation.
Students are asked to journal about their daily experiences after each day that they served, so they could share their experiences with their advisories.
“I’ve realized how happy some kids are; even with rough backgrounds and poor financial situations, they laugh all the time,” junior Molly Winkler said. Winkler is performing her service at The Upper Room, an organization that provides academic and extracurricular programs for underprivileged children.
The majority of the service completed is in contact with those being served, and the agencies where this service is completed are spread out throughout the city. The services these agencies provide reach a variety of ages. The methods these agencies use range from arts programs to counseling to providing food.
