A gas line explosion caused a fire at a Kansas City Plaza restaurant Tuesday, February 19, resulting in one death and 15 injuries, according to KMBZ. The death’s identity has not yet been discovered.
There was notice of a gas like smell, causing the workers to start closing the restaurant around 6 p.m. Witnesses told The Kansas City Star that there were few individuals inside JJ’s when the fire occurred because most had been evacuated. The fire at the restaurant, JJ’s on the corner of 48th and Belleview, was a 4-alarm fire.
The exact cause for the explosion is still left under investigation.
“Early indications are that a contractor doing underground work struck a natural gas line, but the investigation continues,” Missouri Gas Energy issued in a statement on Tuesday, according to CNN.
During a press conference, KC Fire Chief Paul Berardi said that nearly 100 fire fighters responded, according to The Kansas City Star.
JJ’s was left in ruins.
