The STA debate team, compiled of varsity and novice debaters, attended their second tournament of the school year at Harrisonville High School Oct. 20.

According to STA debate moderator Kate Absher, the competition was a bit different from their first one of the year.

“The major difference was that the first [tournament in Sept.] was literal resolutions,” Absher said. “This one, we did more metaphorical topics, so they were much more open-ended. [Our next] debate is at Rockhurst [High School], and again, will be much more literal.”

As for the competition in Harrisonville, Absher noted that while no varsity, or returning, debaters won awards, STA’s novice debate teams received first, second, fourth, sixth, seventh and tenth place awards. In total, 28 STA debaters competed in the tournament, with 24 novice debaters and four varsity debaters.

“We take so many novice teams,” Absher said. “This time, we only took two varsity teams, so statistically, we’re not showing up as much with varsity.”

STA will debate next week at Rockhurst High School Nov. 18.
