The Blue Grotto restaurant in Brookside is one of the best pizza places in Kansas City. Although the restaurant is certainly not restricted to pizza (the menu includes a variety of salads, steaks etc.), its pizza is unmatched.
The Blue Grotto offers fresh tasting, homemade thin crust pizza. In appearance, it is similar to Spin Pizza (which is not far down the road on Main Street), but it offers a much more authentic taste with ingredients like fresh basil and a variety of cheeses.
The crust will melt in your mouth, made from Caputo flour. The Margherita pizza includes just the right amount of sauce, while the Quattro Formaggio blends all the right cheeses (ricotta, gorgonzola, grana padano and taleggio). Meat lovers will enjoy the Salsiccia pizza which includes sausage, tomato, peperonata, oregano and mozzarella. There are also seven other pizzas to choose from.
The open kitchen allows you to see the chefs at work topping your pizza and placing it in the brick oven. The two-story restaurant allows for even better views of chefs throwing pizza dough. And it arrives quickly with the cheese still sizzling.
Although a bit expensive, the food prices range from $5 to $17, the food is worth the price. An eight piece pizza is $13-$14.
