Nine seconds. That is all it took for junior Ann Campbell to beat a record that was set seven years ago. Running at Raymore-Peculiar High School for the Kansas City Metro Cross Country Championships Oct., Campbell set two records and also claimed the title of KC cross country champion.
STA alumna Elizabeth Keaveny set the five kilometer race record for 18 minutes 53 seconds. Campbell broke this record with a time of 18 minutes and 43 seconds, as well as the four kilometer race with a record time of 15 minutes and 13 seconds. Keaveny was present at the race to learn about her record being broken. According to Campbell, she knew she broke the record when she finished and was happy that all her hard work payed off.
“When I crossed the finish line I knew I broke the record because they had a timer up right by the finish line,” Campbell said. “I was happy that I not only set a personal record but the school record too.”
