ENTERTAINMENT: A lesson in feminism

STA is an all-girls school.  Shouldn’t that mean, then, that we are all feminists?

After my four years here at STA I’ve been surprised to learn that no, some of us do not call ourselves feminists.  Some of us, in fact, think the word ‘feminist’ carries a negative connotation.

Weird, right?

So here’s a lesson in feminism 101:

LISTEN TO GIRL BANDS.

It will change your life, I swear.

Everything you wish you could say, they say it, so sing along.

Here are some vital girl bands:

  • The Gossip, one of my personal favorites, from Portland.
  • Le Tigre– a more modern, poppy band, also led by Kathleen Hanna. She’s actually married to Ad-Rock from the Beastie Boys! Silly, but cute match…
  • Joan Jett and the Blackhearts, a classic.  One of the bands led by a girl =that paved the path for bands like Le Tigre.
  • Sleater-Kinney, an all-girl band from Seattle, with really good voices.
  • Bratmobile, also a band in the 90s that developed from the ‘Riot Grrrl’ scene of the 90s in Olympia, Washington.
  • Bikini Kill-  a more punk band from the 90s, led by my favorite musician feminist, Kathleen Hanna. Seriously, she rocks.
