Sophomore Dorian Bailey recently committed to play soccer at the University of North Carolina.Being a sophomore, Bailey cannot officially sign a letter of intent to play at UNC.

“I was super excited,” Bailey said about committing. “My coaches would always tell me that once you commit you should be able to throw a party and not have any second thoughts about it and that’s exactly how it is.”

For the past year, Bailey has gone through the recruiting process with numerous schools, including the University of Virginia, the University of California Los Angeles and the University of North Carolina. According to Bailey, college coaches would call her club coach who in turn would tell her to call the schools. Because of an NCAA rule that forbids colleges to contact players if they are not juniors or seniors, younger athletes have to contact schools themselves.

“Mia Hamm went there, so when Dorian and I were little, we aspired to be just like Mia and go to UNC,” Bailey’s sister Dana said. “I am so glad she chose UNC.”

According to Bailey, she chose UNC because of their of prestigious history of dominating NCAA women’s soccer, winning the most national championships, 22, compared to the next leading school, three. UNC most recently won the 2012 division one women’s soccer national championship. UNC’s reputation as an intellectually well-known school contributed to Bailey’s decision.

“[The University of North Carolina’s] coach Anson Dorrance always has produced a lot of national team players so I thought that would be the best place for me to go to,” Bailey said.

Amidst her decision to play at UNC, Bailey has been to one youth national team camp this year and is currently in Costa Rica playing friendlies against their youth national team. Bailey hopes to make the roster for the U17 World Cup.

“It’s hard not having her play with us, but we know its really important and impressive that she plays for the national team,” STA teammate Caroline Strader said. “We are really happy for her that she gets to go play on the national team.”

In the future Bailey aspires to make the women’s full national team and play in the new women’s professional soccer league.
