While at the National Scholastic Press Association and Journalism Educators of America Conference in Minneapolis, Minnesota, STA newspaper staffers met up with Shawnee Mission East juniors HHelena Buchmann and Erin Reilly. Buchmann is the Portraits Co-Ediotr of the Hauberk, East’s yearbook. Reilly is the Ads Manager and staff writer for the Harbinger, East’s newspaper. We asked them a few questions about their staffs and why they were at the convention.

Junior Helena Buchmann, the Portraits Co-Editor for the Hauberk
Junior Erin Reilly, Ads Manager and staff writer for the Harbinger

What is your staff like?
Reilly: We have more than 70 people on staff right now.
Buchmann: We have 25 or 24 on yearbook. They [the Harbinger staff] have like a lot of class time.

What do you like about this convention?
Buchmann: I like that it’s cold. We’re gonna go back to KC and be like, “it’s so warm here!” People will be like, “No, it’s not, shut up.” Also, I just like the atmosphere, with people talking about journalism 24 hours a day.

What conventions and workshops do you go to as a staff?
Buchmann: Last spring, we went to the Anaheim convention and we went to Dallas for the Gloria Shields workshop in July.

Why do you go to conventions as a staff?
Buchmann: For the Best in Show, because it’s really important. We work hard on our publication. We enjoy going to seminars because we learn things from across the country. People come to our class to talk to us, but they’re mostly local people.

How does it benefit your staff?
Reilly: We get to see other publications as examples.
Buchmann: I get super inspired when I get back.
Reilly: We also bond together.

What does your staff learn?
Reilly: There are classes for everything.
Buchmann: And for critiques and write-offs, too. It’s really nice to hear people’s input on what we’re working on now. Before last convention, we had no idea what we were gonna do for our theme.

What are you doing together as a staff while here?
Buchmann: We’re having a nice dinner tonight, on the itinerary it said “fancy dinner tonight – dress nice.”

What do you do together?
Buchmann: We’re submitting our website for critique tonight, and our editor was freaking out so we were helping her. We also take a lot of selfies.
Reilly: Eight hours at Mall of America can bond you like you won’t believe.
