all ears

‘WARNING: Do not insert swab into ear canal. Use only on the outer surfaces of the ear. Keep out of reach of children.’

Look familiar? Actually, probably not. You wouldn’t recognize this warning, found on the side of every Q-tip box, because you indeed insert that cotton swab into your ear canal and dig around for God-knows-what quite often. But it’s okay, because everyone else does the SAME THING.

Question: Why does everyone stick Q-tips in their ears if they aren’t supposed to?

No one knows, but regardless, it’s sooo weird. Therefore, this week’s topic: wax hunting.

We’re all waxaholics for different reasons. Maybe it’s because we like the feeling of a cotton swab being stuck into the side of our head. Maybe it’s because we have the urge to dig out as much earwax from our body as possible. Maybe we just feel like doing it, so leave us alone.

Q-tip businesses should just be thankful that people are actually using their product for something worthwhile. I mean, seriously, who really uses Q-tips to polish their fine silver, or to remove that tiny dust bunny from a picture frame? I’m thinking no one. At least I don’t.

During my lifetime, I think I have used Q-tips for either cleaning out makeup from under my eyes (probably only done 10 times in my life), or cleaning out my head, which is basically done everyday. It’s now a daily ritual: go to school, shower, clean ear canal. I like not having serious wax buildup in my ear; sue me.

Regardless, we all disregard the Q-tip warning on the side of the box. We all insert swabs into our ear canals and dig around for awhile. And finally, we all stare and admire what we find before we throw the swab in the trash. But that’s another topic for another day.

Until then,
