STA varsity soccer beats St. James Academy 10-0

The St. Teresa’s Academy Stars varsity soccer team beat the Saint James Academy varsity Thunder 10-0 Wednesday in their first game in the MOKAN tournament. Varsity head coach Jeremy McElduff said overall he was very pleased with his team’s performance.

“I felt like we started slow,” McElduff said. “But the girls really picked it up and all in all we played well and finished really well.”

The first Stars goal from sophomore Lizzie Luallin came about halfway through the first half but was followed by a goal from freshman Caroline Strader within five minutes.

The Stars dominated the second half offensively with goals by sophomores Mallory Radtke, Savannah Trujillo and Cristina DeZeeuw, freshman Dorian Bailey, and juniors Maggie Rellihan and Mickey Redlingshafer.

Rellihan and Trujillo led the team in scoring with two goal each. Bailey also led the team with three assists.

“Maggie [Rellihan] and Dorian [Bailey] really stepped up for our team today,” McElduff said. “Our whole team played really well tonight though.”

Rellihan, Trujillo, Redlingshafer, junior Peepers Gray and senior Ava Jurden also contributed an assist.

“Today’s game went well,” Rellihan said. “We played hard and went in with an open mind and I guess it worked.”

According to McElduff, he was pleasantly surprised by the team’s early success.

“The other coaches and myself were surprised about how we are playing,” McElduff said. “We expected the first few games to be rough because it typically takes time to get back in the swing of things. Our girls play really well together.”

The Stars have high hopes about the rest of their season. Their 4-0 win over Shawnee Mission East last Thursday gained recognition from ESPN and a sixth place national ranking and leaves them with a 2-0 record. The Stars are hoping to continue their momentum, hopefully earning another shot at the State title.

“As a team, our first goal is to get through Districts,” McElduff said. “Then we hope to finally get our team back to the state tournament after a few years we didn’t make it.”

Radtke has similar goals for the teams continued success.

“I really hope we can make it through and have a shot at placing or even winning State,” Radtke said. “Right now though, I think we have a really good shot at winning this tournament.”

The MOKAN tournament continues today when the Stars take on Lee’s Summit North.

“[Lee’s Summit North] is a really strong team,” McElduff said. “They’re a really tough opponent and it won’t be an easy game.”

Bailey agrees that tomorrows game won’t be easy but she believes in her team.

“[Lee’s Summit North] will be better than [St. James Academy],” said Bailey. “But we play well and work well together.”
