Manager, team function as one

[nggallery id=53]

Seventeen women find themselves in the field next to M&A on most any given week day. These women make up the STA freshman soccer team. One of the seventeen is coach Jeanella Clark, giving directions. Fifteen are the players, running drills. The last one? That’s freshman Rose Patterson, team manager.

Patterson has been to nearly every event the freshman soccer players attend; each practice, game, and tournament. With dedication and effort in mind, she signed up for manager after encouragement from her friends. For games, she fills the water jug and takes the players’ stats, like goals, misses, and saves. During practices, Patterson sits at a picnic table, works on homework, and helps with the occasional drill.

‘She usually sits [at the bench] and whenever we need somebody or something she is right on top of it,’ Maddie Knopke, a freshman soccer player, said.

While Patterson consistently attends practices and games, she doesn’t let it interfere with her school work.

‘I think [the time commitment] is good because I can get all my homework done, but for the players it’s worse,’ Patterson said.

Patterson spent only one year of soccer before STA under the instruction of Mr. Kevin Connor with Brookside Soccer Club. Although Patterson’s experience only amounts to that year, freshman soccer player Emmie McCabe doesn’t believe it matters.

‘It doesn’t make a difference if [Rose] knows soccer or not, because as long as she understands the game enough, then she can keep track of scores and everything,’ McCabe said.

Patterson agrees that her job isn’t too demanding when it comes to the physical aspects.

‘[Keeping stats is] not hard,’ Patterson said. ‘I just have to pay attention.’

According to McCabe, without a manager like Patterson, the team wouldn’t function as smoothly.

‘First of all, she keeps track of stats, like how many goal attempts you’ve had and how many goals you’ve had and all that stuff,’ McCabe said. ‘So, someone else would have to do that or the coach, which would be hard because she has to pay attention to the game. And then we wouldn’t have water there… which would be terrible.”

While Patterson isn’t always occupied with soccer tasks, she’s always with the team.

‘You have to go to all the practices and everything and you have to miss classes with the team if they have to drive out,’ McCabe said. ‘So yeah, even if you can do your homework during practice, you still have to go.’

According to McCabe, Patterson bonded with the team well.

‘We’re the kind of team that clicked [easily],’ McCabe said. ‘One time, we just had a circle, and we talked a bit to just get to know each other.’

Other teammates agree that Patterson is a cohesive part of the team.

‘She’s included like one of the players,’ Knopke said.

Patterson joined the team to finish her P.E. credit, but she hasn’t been disappointed.

‘I’m pretty glad that I’m manager,’ Patterson said. ‘It’s not bad at all.’
